In a world that is fast consuming its natural resources, the idea of recycling is not new. But it is increasingly imperative. Forests are disappearing, waterways are becoming polluted. The environment, our world, is at risk. It is up to us – each in our own way – to think carefully of how we use our dwindling resources and treat gently and lovingly those things that make up our collective heritage.
It was with this in mind that Kadek Gunarta began his quest to restore and preserve the aesthetic of his island people. Coming from a family of woodworkers, he turned naturally toward the familiar. Dek’s idea of using traditional hand tools to repair and restore antique Javanese hardwood furniture and building materials into contemporary home and garden furnishings is not only environmentally friendly, but results in an elegant end product.
Everything from Dek’s Studio is handmade from recycled hardwoods – mostly teak. An old door becomes a headboard for a bed. Old plow handles become the curved profile of a television console. Two old doors become a cabinet. Imagination and creativity merge to become beauty and practicality.
Wood is a living thing, and like all living things it retains the breath of its past – where it has been, who it has served. Thanks to recycling and preservation, this breath of life has been extended and is available in a wholly new form.
